If you are searching for bathroom fitters in Newton Abbot, you will quickly notice that different companies mean quite different things by it. Some design bathrooms and hand the drawings over. Some supply the products but not the labour. Some do the physical installation but expect you to have already made every decision.
That is where most of the stress in a bathroom project comes from. Not the work itself, but the gaps between the people doing it. Here is what each role actually covers, so you know what you are buying and what you are still responsible for.
What a bathroom designer does
A bathroom designer works out what will physically fit and how the room will function before anything is ordered. That means measuring the space properly, checking where the soil pipe and existing services run, and planning the layout around those constraints rather than around a wish list.
It also covers the decisions that are expensive to change later. Where the door swings, whether the space suits a bath, a shower or both, how much storage you can realistically build in, where the lighting and sockets go, and whether the floor can take the weight of the tiles or the stone you like. A designer should be steering you away from things that will not work as much as showing you things that will.
What a bathroom fitter does
A fitter installs what has been specified. In practice a full bathroom rarely involves one trade. There is strip-out and waste removal, plumbing at first fix, electrical work that has to be certified, plastering, tiling, flooring, then second fix plumbing and the final fit of sanitaryware, screens and brassware.
A good fitter will flag a problem the moment they find one, which, with an on older Devon home, happens more often than not. Lead pipework, uneven walls in a stone cottage, joists running the wrong way for a wet room, or a soil stack in an awkward position are all common. What matters is whether there is someone whose job it is to solve that, or whether it lands back on you.
Why using one company for both usually works better
When design, supply and installation sit with different people, the joins are where things go wrong. The tiler arrives before the tiles do. The electrician was not told about the illuminated mirror. Something is out of stock and nobody decides on a replacement until the fitters are stood in your hallway.
At Inline, we design the bathroom, supply the products and coordinate the trades who install it, so there is one point of contact and one person responsible for the sequence. Several of our clients originally came to us for a kitchen and asked us to take on their bathrooms afterwards for that reason.
What happens to the plumbing and the electrics
Bathrooms are the one room where the electrical work is tightly regulated, because of the zones around the bath and shower. Anything installed in those zones has to be suitable for the location and the work has to be certified. Lighting, shaver sockets, heated mirrors, extractor fans and electric underfloor heating all fall into this.
Ventilation is the detail most often skimped on and the one most likely to cause problems later. An undersized or badly positioned extractor is the usual reason a new bathroom develops damp or mould within a couple of years, and it is far cheaper to get right at first fix than to revisit.
How long a bathroom renovation takes
A straightforward bathroom refit, where the layout stays broadly the same, typically takes 10 – 15 working days. Moving the soil pipe, converting to a wet room, or opening the room up into an adjoining space adds time, because tanking and drying periods cannot be rushed.
The bigger variable is usually lead time on products rather than labour. Some sanitaryware and shower enclosures are held in stock and some are made to order, which is why we like to have every product confirmed before a fitting date is booked rather than after.
What to ask before you book anyone
Ask who is responsible if a product arrives damaged, who holds the electrical certification, whether the quote includes making good the walls and floor, and what happens to the waste. Ask whether the price you have been given is a quotation or an estimate, and what would change it.
Ask to see a bathroom they have finished locally. Photographs of a manufacturer's showroom are not the same thing as a room they installed in a house down the road.

Bathroom project FAQs
What is the difference between a bathroom designer and a bathroom fitter?
A designer plans the layout, specifies the products and works out what will physically fit around the existing services. A fitter carries out the installation. Some companies, including Inline, do both and coordinate the trades in between.
Do I need to find separate trades for a bathroom renovation?
Not if you use a company that project manages the work. A full bathroom usually needs a plumber, an electrician, a tiler and often a plasterer, and someone has to sequence them in the right order.
Can I use my own bathroom fitter with your design and products?
That is something we can discuss at your appointment. [confirm with client: does Inline supply-only, and on what terms?]
To talk through a bathroom project, visit the Inline Design Studio showroom on Wolborough Street in Newton Abbot or book a complimentary design appointment at your home.
